AMAZING
December 27, 2021 by Jacob
Been a Coverstain ( oil base product ) guy for years . I used coverstain for all my cabinet jobs . I purchased the synthetic shellac a while back to speed up the drying process without having to cut corners as i am extremely picky. After reading the reviews I went and purchased my go to ( coverstain ) and was going to return the synthetic shellac. Fast forward to today 12-27-2021 and I’m refinishing my mothers cabinets for Christmas as she has been hint dropping for a while that that is what she wants. Well their was the can of synthetic shellac still sitting so I said what the heck let’s try it .. NEVER WILL I USE COVERSTAIN AGAIN .... 1.) SMELL - everyone said the smell was so strong , very bad, made someone sick !! I can only speak for myself when I say I have used kilz original ( oil ) to seal wallpaper, and use Coverstain all the time and then two are very strong to me . I hate them but its got to be done . Even with my respirator i still smell them and get a head change that I hate . With this product I could not smell it AT ALL through my respirator. My wife came in as I was spraying and she has been around all the products I shoot . She said immediately “ that stuff is not bad at all “. I was very shocked and when I was done and removed my mask it was nowhere near the smell of the other products . I could honestly handle it easily with no mask after spraying . I’m honestly sitting in here where I sprayed writing the review and it’s gone . I smell nothing . It smelled more like a cleaning product and my wife said the same . I could never be in this room still had i sprayed my go to product . So ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ For the smell . 2.) DRYTIME : Another ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Stars . I was spraying the drawer fronts and immediately after spraying 1 I set it down, went to spray another one and by the time I came back it was dry to the touch . I couldn’t believe it seeing how it is a oil base product. I love it 3.) COVERAGE - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It cover just as good as Coverstain the reason it’s so much better is that as soon as I was done i immediately could shoot my second coat and that was all within a 20 min time frame . Coverstain says it dries in 1 hour but that is far from true . It will not powder up when sanding and not even sand able for at least 6 - 24 hours .’ 4.) SAND-ABILITY - within 45 min it was ready to sand Nicely. I use the purple sanding sheets and it left it very smooth and flat. It does not powder up like Coverstain but for some reason it sanded beautiful and smooth without all the crazy amount of dust others leave . Another ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ . TO SUM IT ALL UP : it’s not strong at all if you paint for a living and know paints and primers . I think a lot of these reviews are from diy people cause any real painter would immediately love this product . It is oil base which is a plus for cabinet jobs and dries very very very fast but has no where near the smell of other oil base primers ...... no where near .... DO NOT LET THE DIY REVIEWS FOOL YOU...... I don’t leave reviews but felt I had too because the false reviews kept me from using this amazing product . I honestly know it’s diy people leaving them mainly cause they are complaining about the smell and do not know it is oil base. Trust me from a guy who has painted since 1999 this is the way to go it truly is a shellac just without the hazards of shellac and honestly not even near as strong as shellac . USE IT ONE TIME I PROMISE YOU WILL CONTINUE TO USE .... IM SPEAKING FOR ALL THE GUYS WHO PAINT CABINETS . And honestly for patches as well as it dries very flat with no sheen !!!! Hope this helps anyone who needs a real breakdown and is questioning using it . Wish I could have seen a review like this but i guess someone has to leave it eventually...... ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ All across the board .Was this review helpful to you? Login to rate it.

Better than I expected
June 25, 2021 by Wayde
I've used several different primers in my lifetime, and I consider this to be one of the best, though there is a caveat. I'll start with the good. When stirred and shaken, the consistency is great. It's not too thick--and not too watery like real Shellac (alcohol based primer. This Synthetic Shellac is oil-based, and shouldn't be used to spray on walls, etc.) It goes on very smooth and usually can be done in one coat. Two coats is just icing on the cake and goes on really fast. I used it on 70's wood paneling and it took two coats since the tannin tends to bleed through this kind of wall, though this stuff worked great. I also had very bad pet odor smells and this killed it in its track. It also looks nice when completed. I also got it on a discount, so I count that as a good; otherwise, it's slightly expensive at full price. The bad part is mostly the SMELL. The fumes can just about make anyone nauseous. I've used real Shellac primer before that stunk badly, but not this bad. Use proper respirators to get you through it. I made it through my project with just a dust mask which helped very little, but was better than nothing at all. Also, if you prime over something accidentally, you have about 30 seconds to wipe it off with a wet cloth, or else it pretty much dries there permanently. It also gets on your clothes (and hands.) I wore gloves, so there wasn't any problems there--and I also have "painting" pants and shirts to protect myself. What I didn't expect was my burning eyes after about 10 minutes. I had to get some safety goggles nearby to complete the project. Take proper precautions and your project will go smoothly. But if you open this can and start to prime something without the proper gear to protect you, you'll be overwhelmed by the fumes, and very frustrated to get the stuff off your skin. Was this review helpful to you? Very Disappointed
November 7, 2019 by Jeff
I have never been so disappointed in a Sherwin-Williams product. It was very hard to apply. It started to dissolve our trimmers and rollers after an hour. I mentioned this at my next stop at Sherwin-Williams and the person said they were not surprised. The fumes were overwhelming even though all the windows were all open. The fumes made my wife ill and she could no longer apply it. But we persevered only to find when we painted over it, that the primer had dried unevenly, so we have to sand so the walls in order for them not to look like we had no idea what we were doing. When sanding, the dust clings to you. It even bonds together on your skin so it looks like you accidentally painted yourself. It is hard to get off. One small bedroom took 3 days of sanding. I should have stopped priming with the 1st room and painted, but thought surely the folks at the store would have warned us if it shows through the paint. Horrible, horrible, stuff. It may be the best sealer, but the amount of work it has cost us is unbelievable. This stuff really needs a big WARNING as to how much more difficult it is to use verses regular primer. Was this review helpful to you? Login to rate it.
