Create a fresh, distinctive look by combining the 2021 Color of the Year with Sue Wadden’s top choices for complementary colors and materials.
As in nature, Urbane Bronze SW 7048 (245-C7) is at its best when balanced with its environs. “Layering texture and tone is key,” says Sherwin-Williams Director of Color Marketing Sue Wadden. Here are her suggestions for ensuring Urbane Bronze beams.
Complementary paint colors. Shades of beige, parchment, mushroom and ochre comfortably contrast with the Color of the Year. Wadden’s favorites include Modern Gray SW 7632 (283-C1), shown with Urbane Bronze in the image above, and Messenger Bag SW 7740 (297-C7).
Wood. Species popular in Scandinavia, such as ash, as well as species common in the United States, such as white oak, work particularly well for floors, cabinetry and furnishings. “Darker wood tones work, too, but I especially love the way the lighter species provide some variation, like in nature,” Wadden says.
Stone. Similar to wood, stone that juxtaposes with the deep richness of Urbane Bronze creates a sophisticated look. Wadden’s top picks include Carrara marble, travertine, and quartz or solid surfacing in pale, natural colors.
Metal. Wrought iron, weathered brass and copper pair beautifully with Urbane Bronze, but Wadden favors the sharp, sophisticated contrast of silver and pewter. “Look to your favorite leather pieces for inspiration,” she says. “Just like a leather bag with a silver clasp, Urbane Bronze is stunning with fixtures that have a little glimmer, even if it’s barely there.”
Walls painted Urbane Bronze and Modern Gray come together with pale wood floors to create a calm backdrop for a warm, minimalistic space.
Textiles and textures. For a look that feels rooted in nature, opt for woven wool carpets, upholstery fabric and throws, plus the nubby, organic style of rope and basketry. “The woven seat of a Scandinavian chair or a basket-style pendant light shade provide the perfect counterpoint to Urbane Bronze,” Wadden says. But don’t feel limited. “Rich leathers and soft oranges, yellows, blues and greens have a place alongside this beautiful color, too,” she says.
