How to Paint Interior Doors

Add a pop of color to any room in your home by giving the door a fresh coat of paint. Follow the steps below for the right way to give your interior doors a paint update.

STEP 1

Clean

Wash the surface of the door with a degreasing dish soap and rinse with a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue.

STEP 2

Prep

Use sandpaper to smooth the surface, and wipe the dust off with a clean, damp rag.

If the door has not already been painted or primed, apply a coat of primer. Wait for it to completely dry before painting.

STEP 3

Paint Panels

Use an angle trim brush to paint the paneled areas and around the hinges and hardware.

Tip: Remove hardware ahead of time to make painting your doors quicker and easier. Reattach once the paint is fully dry.

STEP 4

Paint Door

Use a roller to paint the remaining areas of the door in thin, even layers.

STEP 5

Apply Second Coat

Once the door is covered in one layer of paint, allow it to dry at least four hours before applying a second coat.

STEP 6

Finish

After applying a second coat of paint, allow the paint to dry four hours or overnight for best results.
