When it comes to commercial projects, one of the more common questions is "what’s the best paint for handrails?" Well, there’s no one-size-fit-all answer. Even within the same building, different requirements make one product a better choice than another. For light duty interior exterior use, I like the Pro Industrial Water Based Alkyd Urethane. It’s a hybrid coating that gives you oil based performance with water based clean up. For heavier use, choose an epoxy. The Pro Industrial Pre Cat Water Based Epoxy gives you excellent durability even when cleaned with harsh chemicals. While Pro Industrial Water Based Catalyzed Epoxy, a two-component product, will give you that, plus exceptional resistance to watches, rings, belts, anything that may come in contact with the railing. For exteriors, urethanes are the way to go. Pro Industrial Hydrogloss is an acrylic polyester urethane that gives excellent color and gloss retention. While the top-of-the-line Pro Industrial Water Based Acrolon 100, provides exceptional resistance to anything that people and nature can throw at it. Handrails will always require maintenance, but choosing the right coating can help minimize the upkeep needed.
