How to Stain Concrete Driveways

Staining your driveway is an easy way to boost curb appeal and update the look of your home. The best part? The process is relatively quick and simple. Just follow the steps below for how to stain concrete driveways.

Cost: $$
Skill Level: Beginner
Duration: 1-2 days

STEP 1

Prep

Prepare the surface by removing any foreign substances. Scrape off  surface debris. To ensure even stain application, clean your driveway thoroughly. This will likely require hosing and/or pressure washing.

Tip: Need to remove oil stains from your driveway? Here's a hack:

  • Apply baking soda to the stain and let sit for 30 minutes to an hour.
  • Scrub with a bristle brush.
  • Rinse.

If the stain persists, try the same process with powder laundry detergent or dish soap.

STEP 2

Let Dry

Before adding stain, give your driveway enough time to dry completely.

STEP 3

Apply Stain

Review the label directions of your concrete stain for information on how to prepare the product and the best ways to apply it. You will likely need to use a roller or a sprayer.

Apply two coats, let dry and enjoy your gorgeous, freshly-stained driveway.

Tip: To boost the traction of inclined driveways, add H&C® SharkGrip® Slip Resistant Additive to the stain prior to application.

  • SharkGrip® will not change the color of the stain.
  • SharkGrip® should not be used in place of a non-skid finish.

If you're re-staining your driveway:

Is your driveway already stained, and you’re looking to stain it a different color? Start by testing the surface to see if it can be re-stained without removing the current stain. Look to see if water beads on the surface. If it doesn't, then you should be able to stain it a different color. Clean the surface with water and a concrete cleaner. Ensure that the surface has fully dried before following the steps above to apply your new stain.
