What to Consider When Choosing Hardwood Flooring:
Design of Hardwood Floor
Color: The variety of wood flooring choices comes from species’ natural colors, stains and finishes. Lighting can be a factor on how your finished floor will look, so make sure to ask your Sherwin-William’s rep for samples.
Species: Species are the types of wood used. Choose the pronounced grain of oak or the more understated, cleaner look of maple. There is also the classic look of Brazilian cherry or more exotic looks. You have many choices that all come with the highest durability of any flooring.
Widths: Hardwood flooring comes in strips or planks. “Strips” are board widths of less than three inches. “Planks” are three inches or wider. Board width dramatically affects the look of the floor. Wide width hardwood floors are lovely in a large room, but can overwhelm a small one.
Edge Detail: The way the edges and the ends of the boards are cut is called edge/end detail. Options include square, micro beveled, eased and beveled. For a more dramatic effect, select a beveled detail that emphasizes the definition. Square edges create a smooth and nearly seamless appearance.
Gloss: Low-gloss and light-colored floors can hide the minor scratches that can accumulate over time. Higher gloss floors give a high end look however, do not hide scratches as well.
Style: Style includes various types of wood from smooth surface to more contemporary décor.
Types of Hardwood Flooring:
Solid Hardwood Floor: 100% hardwood milled from lumber. As a natural material, hardwood reacts to changes in its settings, like moisture and extreme temperatures, which cause solid wood to shrink and expand. All solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished if needed over the years. Solid hardwood is not recommended for below ground or in bathrooms.
Engineered Hardwood Floor: Engineered wood flooring is build up of layers of wood. It consists of three to ten layers, called plies that are glued together. The multi-ply structure gives engineered wood superior stability, greater than solid wood, which reduces concerns associated with shrinking and expanding when temperature and humidity change. Engineered wood can be installed below ground making it a great choice for finished basements and below grade apartment units.
